After wowing the crowds at the New York Auto Show with its impressive take on the Civic’s already eye-catching styling, Honda has gone ahead given us insight into just what it can do. As is often the case with a hot-hatch like the Type R, they did it by showing it smashing an impressive record for front-wheel drive models on the Nürburgring.

Fitting the Civic Type R with a roll cage for safety, Honda decided to see how the hatch’s chassis rigidity, weight balance, and other performance gear held up. The result was a lap time of 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds—handily trouncing the previous record holder by three whole seconds. That means quite a bit in the world of lap times, and we bet the folks at Honda are pretty proud.

As well they should be. Arriving in dealerships later this spring, the Civic Type R builds on the hatchback body style with more aggressive design cues, standard manual transmission, a turbocharged engine, and 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. With an Adaptive Damper System and Limited Slip Differential producing tighter cornering and handling, it’ll be a real joy to drive.
